Connecting With Plants

Mountain Huckleberry in late summer.

In addition to trying out new recipes on my two boys, I am passionate about wild plants, no matter the season. Seeing new growth and gobbling up edible greens in the spring is a delicacy after a long winter and then there’s late summer when the mountain huckleberries start calling. Whether it’s in the backcountry woods or a neighborhood park, I’m one of those people who often turn a brisk walk into a plant “crawl.”

Wild Plant Medicine

For the last 10 years, I’ve had the great honor of learning and working alongside herbalists, native food specialists and educators Elise Krohn and Elizabeth Campbell. I’ve been a founding team member on the development of the Tend, Gather, Grow curriculum, a program dedicated to educating youth about wild edible and medicinal plants and the rich cultural traditions that surround them. Most recently, I apprenticed with the esteemed herbalist Joyce Netishen in Elemental Plant Medicine at Fire Rose Farm in McCleary, Washington.
